Rietvlei Nature Reserve does not have the Big 5 but it is a reserve which hosts cheetah as a conservation program. It does, however, have general game including rhinos on the reserve.

There are some great birding and great bird-watching spots in the reserve. In the spring and summer months, Rietvlei is a birders paradise. There are so many different bird species that call this place home. Rietvlei is always busy with visitors and it is a fantastic place just to go for a picnic.

Rietvlei also has a lion enclosure which you can visit and the lions are part of a research project for the conservation of the lion species.

They have a beautiful little coffee shop in the center of the reserve. There you can relax and enjoy a good cuppa joe while enjoying the outdoors and the splendid nature around you. While enjoying the nature, you can also experience some of the wildlife just passing by.


There are various activities that you can do at Rietvlei Nature Reserve. Enjoy a guided day-hike of approximately 14km which is 4 hours long. Guided overnight hikes from Friday to Sunday which is ± 21km long over the 3 days. The night drives are fantastic but are upon special request. Day horse trails, overnight horse trails, and the lion camp tours.

All these different tours are upon special request and usually require between 6 and 20 people, depending on the type of tour that you want to do. All the tours are done by qualified FGASA Guides. The FGASA Guides are well experienced and will instill a great amount of knowledge to you.
